Get to know us
Guano Co was born in 1982, deep in the redwoods of Trinidad, California—at a time when Humboldt County pulsed with rebellion, resilience, and raw connection to the land. The Back-to-the-Land movement was still alive, with communes and homesteads dotting the forested hills. The “CAMP” era (Campaign Against Marijuana Planting) had just begun, turning rural life into a delicate balance of survival, secrecy, and self-sufficiency. It was wild in every sense—untamed, unregulated, and unrelenting.
Amid that chaos, a different kind of vision took root: to nourish the soil instead of exploiting it. Guano Co emerged not as a grow operation, but as a soil-first supply company—dedicated to offering organic inputs like seabird and bat guano, earthworm castings, and kelp meal sourced with integrity from across the globe. The idea was simple: healthy plants start with living soil, and great cultivation begins from the ground up.
What started as a small wholesaling operation in a historic barn has since grown into a nationally distributed brand—still committed to that same wild-hearted ethos: do it naturally, do it right, and let the land lead the way.
About the owner
Raised in Marin County during the height of the 1960s and ’70s, our owner grew up immersed in a time of cultural revolution, creativity, and rebellion. As a teenager, he’d sneak into music festivals to see legends like Otis Redding and Janis Joplin perform live—an early sign of the passion and fearlessness that would shape the rest of his life.
Eventually drawn north to Humboldt County, he found something even more powerful than the music scene: the redwoods. That love turned into a lifelong mission. As a long-time member of Save the Redwoods League, he has dedicated himself to buying up redwood forest properties to protect them from logging and ensure they remain wild and untouched.
His journey has been anything but conventional. He led redwoods tours for locals and tourists, coordinated wildfire transport crews across the western U.S., and managed Guano Co through its busiest seasons—often all at once. A woodcraft connoisseur, he’s hand-built homes from rare curly redwood and madrone along the North Coast and in the San Juan Islands. He’s also an avid student of history, natural landscapes, and a lifelong Rolling Stones devotee, having seen the band live more than 50 times.
To him, Guano Co is more than a fertilizer company—it’s a legacy of land stewardship, craftsmanship, and the belief that real things, like real soil, are worth protecting.
